Effects of specimen size and crack depth ratio on calibration curves for modified compact tension specimens

The compact tension (CT) test is frequently used to determine fracture properties of metallic materials, such as fracture energy, fracture toughness, crack propagation rate and J-R curves. In the case of cement based composites, a modified compact tension (MCT) specimen can be advantageously used due to the negligible stress concentration arising around the pulling dowel pins during the test. In this work, finite element calculations are used to determine the calibrations curves for the stress intensity factor K, COD, CMOD and CMOD(4), needed for an accurate determination of the fracture parameters, as a function of the ratio a/W. Sales training and ICT: a literature review

16 páginasPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify in the specialized literature published in the past 20 years about sales training, some elements or key factors that could be applied to the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a support for the learning of the detection of business opportunities. Design/methodology/approach – This is a study of a documentary nature in which a method of systematic literature review was applied to 132 studies published in journals indexed in Scopus and Scielo on sales training processes. The analysis of the data combined a process of categorization and frequencies statistical analysis. Findings – The results highlight the role of ICT and specifically the use of mobile devices to support the strengthening of training in sales in terms of relationship, opportunity and flexibility in communication with the client, the construction of positive emotional environments and experiential/situated training. Originality/value – The originality of this study lies in the extraction and interpretation of key factors focused on addressing a guiding question about the relationships between the use of ICT and sales training

Comparison of fracture toughness values of normal and high strength concrete determined by three point bend and modified disk-shaped compact tension specimens

The modified disk shaped compact tension test is a configuration derived from standard compact tension test that is used for measuring fracture mechanical properties of primarily metallic materials. The compact tension configuration is commonly used for measurement fracture mechanical properties as e.g. fracture toughness, Young’s modulus, work of fracture etc. The modified compact tension tests imply significant modifications of the specimen morphology in order to avoid premature failure. The modified compact tension test is not proper for quasi-brittle materials due to its complicated shape (steel-concrete interface), but it is easily extracted from drill core and we do not need large amount of material for obtaining fracture properties as we need for e.g. three- or four- point bend test. Since it is a new test method, a wide range of tests is needed to be done before it can be applied. In the paper the selected outputs of the experiments performed on normal and high strength concrete will be processed and the values of fracture mechanical parameters will be discussed

Uno de ellos es el tiempo de reacción en el procesamiento léxico, el cual sería más lento comparado al de los niños normales. Con el fin de dilucidar si los niños con TEL son más lentos en este tipo de procesamiento, este estudio sometió a tareas de decisión léxica a 34 sujetos de entre 7 años y 7 años 11 meses de los cuales 17 tienen diagnóstico de TEL expresivo y los 17 restantes son niños con un desarrollo comunicativo normal. La presente investigación ofrece una propuesta de auto- capacitación para docentes de las diferentes áreas académicas con el ánimo de promover el desarrollo de competencias y habilidades comunicativas mediadas por el uso de herramientas de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) en el quehacer pedagógico de la cotidianidad escolar. Es una propuesta didáctica dirigida a los docentes del Colegio La Palestina I.E.D Sede B en la cual se pretende potenciar sus habilidades y competencias comunicativas a través de un Aula Virtual de Aprendizaje (AVA) diseñada para tal fin. Esta investigación presenta de manera general los elementos didácticos y metodológicos para incorporar las herramientas Web y Web 2.0 en el proceso educativo con el fin de romper los paradigmas tradicionales de comunicación y educación en la apropiación del conocimiento. Para ello, esta propuesta se fundamenta en el fortalecimiento de las competencias comunicativas en los docentes, objeto de la presente investigación, quienes mediante las TIC podrán lograr mayor eficacia y eficiencia en el quehacer pedagógico, partiendo de actividades cotidianas, presentándolas de manera más atractiva, variada y sugestiva; de manera tal que motiven a los niños y jóvenes hacia la apropiación del conocimiento a través del uso de los medios comunicativos que ofrece la Web para lograr una mejor calidad educativa

Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States. Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
